Hwang Sunyoung (b. 1988) explores physical and psychological layering in her work, creating a sense of strata beneath and within the picture plane. Her practice reflects the unconscious flow of internalized thoughts, emotions, memories, and impressions, which she materializes into tangible forms. Through this process, Hwang captures the incoherent and metaphorical nature of what lies beneath the surface.

Hwang’s solo exhibitions have been held at Project Gallery, Arundel (2016) and Galerie ERD, Seoul (2017, 2021). Her work has also appeared in group exhibitions including Things That Matter: Emotional Intelligence in Research at Hockney Gallery, London (2015); Lost in the Woods at The Square Gallery, London (2016); Last Night a Brush Saved My Life at The Address Gallery, Brescia (2019); Antisocial Isolation at The Saatchi Gallery, London (2020); and New Now: Part 2 at Guts Gallery, London (2024). She works between London and Seoul and holds a B.F.A. from the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, and an M.F.A. from the Royal College of Art, London.
