Exploring interiors and interiority, Yoo Jung Ellie Choi creates evocative domestic spaces populated by pensive figures absorbed in solitude. Her meticulous brushwork and smooth surfaces enhance the ethereal atmosphere that pervades her compositions. Doors, windows, and stairs serve as interstitial spaces through which surreal elements infiltrate Choi's rational modern interiors. Choi had her solo debut in 2021 with the exhibition A Lone Return At 175 Gallery in Seoul. In addition, she has participated in dual exhibitions at Seongbuk Young Art Space, Seoul (2023) and Gallery IS, Seoul (2016). Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at Seongbuk Young Art Space, Seoul (2023); Hapjungjigu, Seoul (2022); BGA Maru, Seoul (2021); Art Delight Gallery, Seoul (2019); Dongsomun, Seoul (2019); and Woods-Gerry House, Providence (2018), among others.
Exploring interior spaces and the human psyche, Choi's works evoke residential spaces filled with solitary figures. The meticulous brushstrokes and smooth surfaces enhance the ethereal atmosphere that permeates her works. Doors, windows, and staircases serve as niche spaces, through which surreal elements infiltrate rational, modern interiors. Yoojung Choi received her BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design, USA, and her MFA in sculpture from the Korea National University of Arts. She had her debut exhibition ≪The Prodigal Son Returned≫ at 175 Gallery in Seoul in 2021 and recently completed a solo exhibition at Drawing Room (2024) in Seoul. He has also participated in two solo exhibitions at Seongbuk Young Art Space (2023) and Gallery Is (2016) in Seoul. In addition, she has participated in group exhibitions at Seongbuk Young Art Space (2023), Hapjungjigu (2022), BGA Maru (2021), Art Delight Gallery (2019), Dongsomun (2019), and Woods-Gerry House (2018) in Providence, RI, USA. She recently completed her first solo exhibition with the gallery at Pérez Project Berlin.
