The things being stolen are the conditions or situations of other people, objects, or animals, and through this act, emotions like happiness and joy are gained.

In order to commit the act of stealing, the subject becomes an invisible entity, moving stealthily and secretly (偷偷). The object of theft is something that cannot be myself, and because it cannot be carried out if discovered, the subject naturally transforms into another being to enjoy forbidden actions. Breaking taboos comes with a sense of exhilaration. As seen in the works, setting fire to clothes or startling someone by suddenly emerging from a bathtub filled with water are traces of stealing the happiness of the object.

The act of stealing something without any cost or effort is addictive, as it is obtained without any effort. It is not truly one’s own but is, in fact, a temporary satisfaction, like a surrogate pleasure. In this way, the invisible subject floats in the paradox that happiness can only exist when “stolen through the eyes of others.”

Kim Xian’s major solo exhibitions include “TIME SLEEP” (Art Side Gallery, 2024), “CLOSED MARKET” (GALERIEOVO, Taipei, 2023), and “ETERNAL LAND” (Gallery In HQ, 2023). Group exhibitions include “Harper’s Holiday Show” (Harper’s Chelsea, New York, 2024) and “Phantom Room” (NEW CHILD, Antwerp, 2024).
